Where is Armidale
Armidale NSW is a majestic city nestled in the mountains
of the New England, sitting comfortably next to the wondrous
wilderness of the gorge country. Armidale lies midway
between Sydney and Brisbane and a scenic two hour drive to
the coast via the
Waterfall Way. You are presented with a plethora
of travel options to reach Armidale;
Rail,
Road and
Air. A group of students run to coast each year so we
know you can also travel by foot and probably cycle. An
ocean going liner would not be the preferred option.
Getting to (or from) Armidale:
Road
South To Sydney/Newcastle
|
|
While the most often used road journey between Armidale and
Sydney is to follow the New England Highway until it joins
the Sydney Newcastle expressway this is not the shortest
route. The shortest and quickest road trip to Sydney is to
follow New England Highway until Uralla and then turn to
Walcha, and follow the path through Nowendoc, Gloucester,
Stroud and join the Pacific Highway about 30k north of
the Hexham Bridge. Then join the Newcastle Sydney
Expressway. This road has some windy stretches between
Nowendoc and
Gloucester so take your time here and enjoy the
magnificent country side. You will still arrive in Sydney
(or Newcastle) much quicker than if you had followed the New
England highway.
East to the Coast
Coffs is the largest main centre on the coast. It is a
comfortable drive of 2.5 hours down the Waterfall Way
through
Ebor,
Dorrigo and
Bellingen. There are some fantastic spots to stop on
this route. View the Wollomombi Falls 40k east of Armidale
or straight the picturesque Ebor falls and have a bite to
eat at the
Ebor Falls Hotel Motel. The Dorrigo National park
contains the Dorrigo Rainforest centre. This is a must see
destination. Take a short walk on the Sky Walk, a slightly
longer walk on the boardwalk and get some real exercise by
setting out on one of the many trials. Be back in time to
visit the rainforest centre and have a cappuccino in the
canopy.
Between Dorrigo and Bellingen you move from the mountains to
the coast. Though this is only a short journey allow plenty
of time, to drive slowly admire the scenary and stop is the
specially provided areas to view some of the many
waterfalls. After all you are on the
Waterfall Way. Bellingen is another place where you will
be glad you stopped. On a weekday or a weekend there always
seems to be activity.
Soon after you leave the Bellingen you will arrive at the
Pacific Highway. You can turn south for
Urunga,
Nambucca Heads, Kempsey,
Port Macquaire and eventually Sydney or north to Sawtell,
Coffs Harbour,
Woolgoolga,
Grafton,
Lismore,
Ballina, Byron and onto the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
North to Brisbane
One way is straight up the New England Highway through
Guyra, Glen Innes, Tenterfield, Stanthorpe and Warwick and
then across to Brisbane (or the Gold Coast via Beaudesert
the short way, or through southern Suburbs of Brisbane to
enjoy the tollways and expressways).
Alternatively you can follow the Waterfall Way through Ebor
and instead of turning to Dorrigo go straight ahead to
Grafton via Nymbodia. The head north up the coast. The
road for around 50k prior to Nymbodia can be windy in
patches. But this way is still much quicker and shorter
than going to Grafton via Dorrigo, Bellingen and Pacific
Highway
West to...
Follow the New England Highway through Uralla and Bendemeer
to Tamworth. From Tamworth head to Gunnedah. From Gunnedah
you can head North to Moree (and their fantastic Artesian
spas) or continue west to Coonabarabran, Gilgandra and
Dubbo. A whole host of paths open up to you at Dubbo –
Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Broken Hill and South
Australia.
Armidale is serviced from Sydney by QantasLink

Take the Train to Armidale
If you would like to work in your mobile office, read a book
for a day or just veg out travel to Armidale by Train.
According to the
timetable it is a trip of 8 hours 15 minutes from
Central station. I have loved this trip every time I have
done it. Maybe all long distance trail travel is great.
